I have the DeltaCopy service running on Windows 2008 Server with port 873 open.

From a remote client running Windows 7, I'm attempting to run a back up using the DeltaCopy Client.

On the client, I unzipped the DeltaCopyRaw folder onto the desktop (the download that doesn't include the installer).

From that folder I double clicked on DeltaC.exe, and this brought up the client.

I set up a backup profile that included the ip address of the remote server, and the files I wanted to back up to the virtual folder.

However, when I run the back up, I get the following error:

view plaincopy to clipboardprint?
@ERROR: chdir failed
rsync error: error starting client-server protocol (code 5) at /home/lapo/packaging/rsync-3.0.4-1/src/rsync-3.0.4/main.c(1504) [sender=3.0.4]

Error starting client-server protocol
Profile 'Profile1' executed in 2883 milliseconds. One or more errors were encountered.

Are there any additional ports that need to be open on the remote server, other than 873?

What exactly is going on when the client connects to the server. Doesn't ssh have to come into play. If so, doesn't it run on a different port than 873?

I'm thinking this problem might have to do with the fact that I'm using passwords:
http ://forums.aboutmyx.com/forums/posts/list/115.page#33260

However, I also noticed an option in the client: "Connect via SSH".

For testing, I've (1) removed authentication on the client and server side, and (2) selected the "Connect via SSH" option on the client.

Do additional ports need to be open on this Windows 2008 server, now that I am using "Connect via SSH"?

The reason I ask, is because now I'm getting the following errors:
view plaincopy to clipboardprint?
ssh: connect to host 77.78.77.778 port 22: Connection timed out

rsync: connection unexpectedly closed (0 bytes received so far) [sender]

rsync error: unexplained error (code 255) at /home/lapo/packaging/rsync-3.0.4-1/src/rsync-3.0.4/io.c(632) [sender=3.0.4]

Because the error says:
@ERROR: chdir failed

I thought it might be permissions problem on the server. So, I right-clicked on the virtual directory I created, and clicked "Fix File Permissions".

I still get the same error.

Try the following:

First, DO NOT use SSH or Authentication until you get it without them. Besides, since you are using Windows on both client and server, DO NOT use SSH at all. SSH option comes into picture if you are using Linux/UNIX.

Second, create a brand new folder on the server and create a virtual directory and see if this works.

Question: Which user login are you using to run the server? Make sure the same users owns the folder you are trying to share.

To confirm your client is connecting to the server and this is a permission issue, try the following:

* Open a console window (DOS) on your client machine
* Type the following command:

telnet YourServerIPAddress 783

This command should open a blank screen. If not, the problem is related to your network. Perhaps there is a firewall in between.

Thanks.

Petarian,

I was about to post my partial success, and saw your posting. Thanks so much for addressing this.

When I originally configured the service, I deleted the default virtual directory, and instead created a new virtual directory that pointed to
c:\Groups\Group1

I wanted to create different virtual directories for different groups of people, all of which couldn't see each other's backups.

At first, I used Authentication by checking it in the Virtual directory options menu. I got an error, then I turned authentication off.

But I still continued to get this error:

1. @ERROR: chdir failed
2. rsync error: error starting client-server protocol (code 5) at /home/lapo/packaging/rsync-3.0.4-1/src/rsync-3.0.4/main.c(1504) [sender=3.0.4]
3.
4. Error starting client-server protocol
5. Profile 'Profile1' executed in 2883 milliseconds. One or more errors were encountered.

This implied to me, that I had some type of permission problems, but I couldn't figure out where the permissions were the problem.

Ultimately, I created another virtual directory called "backup" (which best I can remember was the default one that I initially deleted), and pointed it to c:\backup, and I was able to do a transfer successfully.

However, why can't I achieve the same results with the first virtual directory I created (c:\Groups\Group1)? And why is it, on the client, that the only virtual directory that will propagates the drop-down-menu is "Backup" (sometimes it will list it 5 times in the drop down)?

How will I ever be able to protect one groups backup from another groups backup, if I can't create virtual directories without @ERROR: chdir ?

I really appreciate your help.

Hello,

I have more than less same error (I think). After uninstalling the 1.3 and upgrading to 1.4.

No SSH, no Auth, server and client on same XP box.

OK,

My Issue is gone.

For some reason the update process changed the Virtual directory setting in a way that it pointed to C:\Backup not the F:\Backup

Check your virtual directories..
